The Best And Worst Co-Branded Cars Of All Time, according to AOL Auto.

AOL believes that the best example of automotive co-branding with non-auto products of all time is Ford's association with Eddie Bauer. Other successes they list are the 1979 Cadillac Seville Gucci Edition, the Lincoln Town Car 1998 - 2002 Cartier series, the many versions of the Ford F-series Harley-Davidson Edition, and the Levi Jeep series (they mention the use of the Wrangler as a Jeep model name, but that happened afterward; the Levi Jeeps were CJ-5s and CJ-7s), while the failures included a Chrysler Imperial Frank Sinatra Edition and a Mitsubishi Pajero Mini Peanuts Edition.

There are at least two co-brandings they did not mention, however, and both of them involve the Warner Brothers' Looney Tunes. While I have no idea how well/badly the Chevrolet Venture Warner Brothers Edition did, I would have to rate the earlier one as the best automotive co-branding ever, beyond the Ford Eddie Bauer Editions. It started in the late '60s and was called the Plymouth Road Runner.

Harry Hurt is dead

"So who was Harry Hurt when he was alive?"

Hugh Harrison "Harry" Hurt Jr. was an aviator for the United States Navy during the Korean War. Before this, he earned his bachelor's degree at Texas A&M. Afterward, he earned a master's degree in aeronautical engineering at the University of Southern California (USC).

None of these events in his life made him particularly notable. Neither did the fact that he owned and rode several motorcycles in his life, starting with a Cushman scooter and including at least two Triumph Bonnevilles (original, pre-1984 ones) and at least one Harley-Davidson and Norton each.

However, after earning his master's, he remained at USC as a researcher. He led a study into motorcycle accidents, specifically regarding the factors that cause them. He and his team of researchers, all of whom rode motorcycles, studied more than nine hundred motorcycle accidents, interviewed more than two thousand motorcyclists, and analyzed more than three and a half thousand police reports. His findings and conclusions were published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), who had sponsored the research, as Motorcycle Accident Cause Factors and Identification of Countermeasures, Volume 1: Technical Report, but it is more commonly known as the Hurt Report.

The Hurt Report is important to me and to millions of others like me who ride motorcycles. It is a study into how we are injured and how we can protect ourselves. Some of the more important conclusions included the need for protective clothing and helmets, the need for the rider to make himself as conspicuous as possible ("Be seen and not hurt!"), the need for drivers to be educated to look out for motorcyclists, and the need for us motorcyclists to be educated in the control of motorcycles and in awareness of their environment.

While the Hurt Report has been described as "the most comprehensive safety study of the 20th Century" and "the benchmark of motorcycle crash research", the research behind it was conducted at a time when the factory sportbike and the factory touring bike as we know them did not exist. Today, the "standard" motorcycle that had dominated the market for decades by the late '70s is in the minority. Also, in the late '70s, a 450 cc - 650 cc bike was considered "mid-sized", while today they are considered "entry-level" and 250 cc commuter bikes are considered fit only for beginners. Everyone, including Hurt, has seen the need for a new study but, despite commitments from the US Government, the American Motorcycle Association (AMA, but not the American Medical Association, which is also AMA), and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), not enough funding is available. Hurt's opinion was that "the current problem is older riders, bigger bikes and alcohol."

Upon retiring from USC in 1998, Hurt started the non-profit corporation Head Protection Research Laboratory (HPRL) to evalueate head protection equipment, including helmets. HPRL recently conducted a large-scale study into the causes of motorcycle accidents in Thailand, where motorcycles outnumber cars and are used as basic transportation.

Hurt continued to ride motorcycles until ten years ago when he became physically unable to continue riding. His widow claims that he had never had a crash.

Harry Hurt died on 29 November 2009 from a heart attack in a Pomona, CA, hospital while recovering from back surgery. He was eighty-one years old. He is survived by his wife, two sons, three daughters, and ten grandchildren.

I passed by ~WinonaHeart page for old time's sake and among the messages were two that insult not just her but all Sonic fan artists. One of these comment is by ~CheesyC: [link] while the other is by ~MingoDog: [link]

CheesyC: "Gets a crapload of *cough*undeserved*cough* Pageviews, and leaves. Wow."

When asked why they're undeserved, he replies: "I'm just too strict with judging an artist's quality by originality. That's me."

MingoDog goes further, getting a wholehearted endorsement from CheesyC in the process:

"...You know, you, Purity, and a few other artists all have hedgehog girls who look exactly alike, minus color and few hair-changes, but other than that, they all look exactly like the same character. It's a turn-off, and takes away any originality."

He goes on to say to a defender:

"Perhaps you say these things because you know them well/are fans/friends of them, but those who do not know them, can tell the in a pinch what is obvious and what is not. :bored: Do not convince me otherwise when I have done the work and believe me, I've taken a look just fine. "

*****

So, I ask myself: Is this true? Does the Emperor really have no clothes? Why am I a fan of Sonic fancharacters?

The artists who draw them will be the first to tell you that they aren't high art. However, there is some effort in their creation, giving them their own looks and their own personalities.

It is ultimately the personalities that hook us. Venus was funny, interesting, and charming. She liked boxing and jogging and octopi and watermelon and martial arts and insulting Shadow (the last very much to her cost). Becky, whose design seems to be pretty much an un-recoloured female Sonic, nonetheless has her own irrepressible personality. And if one interesting personality isn't enough, try five: Jade, Crystal, Emerald, Sapphire, and Ruby, the Jewel Carriers.

Perhaps MingoDog is right when he says: "I don't care if someone has an Amy recolor, there's only so much you can change with Sonic characters without making them look ridiculous..." After all, the formula is fairly straightforward: big round head with some kind of muzzle, bean-shaped body about the same size as the head, and some limbs and accessories for good measure.

It's a basic and rather limited formula, sort of like twelve-bar blues. No-one's ever going to become the next Santana by sticking to the twelve-bar blues, and the uninitiated might not be able to tell the difference between Etta James, Koko Taylor, and Big Mama Thornton, but that won't stop me from rompin' and stompin' 'til midnight! It might not be "Breezin'" or "Gypsy Queen", but it's still fun. If fun can still be extracted from the formula, who cares if it's formulaic?

Postscript:
Part of MingoDog's tirade goes: "...when multi-artists can't seem to make their characters look separate, or ditch the exact same Amy-style of having three bangs with the addition of longer hair and Rouge the Bat-eyeshadow and facial expression... It doesn't even need to be said. Originality had been lost." Based on this, I wonder what he would think of *chibi-jen-hen's Jewel Carriers, none of whom is a hedgehog, none of whom normally wears eye shadow, only one of whom has the "triple-bangs" (and in so doing reminds one more of Tails than of Amy), and one of whom is a horned lizard girl without hair or boobs. I hope his words become stale and unpalatable by the time he has to eat them.
